Earlier on in the year Kent life magazine contacted me regarding my beach-combing activities and how I create art out of the marine plastic objects I find. The article can be found in full here: 'Beachcombing Article' and I will also be uploading a magazine scan (which has more images) here: 'www.stevemcpherson.co.uk- Press'. Hope you enjoy it.

Vac From The Sea (Electrolux) - interview about creating art from plastic debris
21/7/10, 21:55
Posted by Administrator

To raise public awareness about the plastic pollution of our seas, Electrolux aims to gather plastic debris from vulnerable marine habitats – and produce a limited number of vacs out of it. Goto theVac-from-the-sea website for more information.

They also got in contact with me for an interview about creating art with marine plastic and what that means to me. The post can be found at the link above, or click on the images below.

Go to the plastiki blog to read the full feature.

The good ship Plastiki , "a unique 60ft catamaran engineered from approximately 12,500 reclaimed plastic bottles and srPET, a fully recyclable material. A vessel relying primarily on renewable energy systems, the Plastiki and her crew will journey more than 11,000 nautical miles drawing attention to the health of our oceans, in particular the colossal amounts of plastic debris, by showcasing waste as a resource and demonstrating real world solutions through the design and construction of the Plastiki." Images from Lost - Song at the Whitstable Biennale 2010

From the Kent Cultural Baton Site at the Whitstable Biennale 2010, and forming part of the Biennale's satellite projects for one day the Fog Horn Sculptures sounded and returned the Lost - Song back to the coast. A small bit of extra info on the works can be found here. A great day, great response with many people participating. Unfortunately the constant stream of visitors and willing participants meant I only managed to use my camera at the quieter times, which were few. Below is a taster of the day, the site, the work and the varying weather conditions.

'Lost - Song' One day intervention, Whitstable Biennale & Kent Cultural Baton
11/6/10, 16:46
Posted by Administrator

For one day - Sunday 20th June 2010, I will be exhibiting my new work at the Kent Cultural Baton site of the Whitstable Biennale. 5 low-tech, recycled, and hand powered horns will sound a combination of marine fog warning signals, through the act of participation by the public. Come along and for one day, help bring the sound that was once a common occurrence on our coast back.

Marine Conservation Society UK, Beach Clean, Kent.

MSCUK asked me to attend and assist in their beach clean up at Kingsdown, near Deal.

Their lead Beachwatch sponsor, SeaFrance, is based in Dover, and they regularly organise beach cleans at Kingsdown for their staff to volunteer at. They planned this one to coincide with World Oceans Day (8th June), and 90 children from the local school got involved too. The weather held out, I beach combed and talked to the children about my work and marine litter. A great World Oceans Day morning.
