The Whitley Cup - for the Whitley Arts Trail

Whitley Cup for the Whitley Arts Festival Trail

The Whitley Cup (Handle and Strapping)
Grave-goods (2200-1500 BC).

The handle and relating strapping from what is now known as The Whitley Cup, thought to have belonged to 'The Wessex Culture' of the Early Bronze Age.

Found in 1986 by school boy H Fury amongst a pile of stones and rubble (possible cairn and secondary burial site), near an unconfirmed yet documented Bronze Age barrow 1 km South of Reading in the Whitley area.

Present is the handle and strapping hand crafted in the design of a Sea-Wyvern (a winged and fish-tailed reptilian creature of legend), reconstructed around a plaster reproduction of a traditional ceramic handled ceremonial cup. Such drinking vessels as in the case of The Whitley Cup were objects of status amongst Bronze Age warriors and would have been used almost certainly for the drinking of alcohol, probably beer or mead.

The Whitley Cup pieces have been remarkably crafted from a little known resinous compound (Arbor Creta Putty), which when hard has a similar consistency to that of modern plastics. WASL document it as being created by mixing heated tree resins with powdered chalk and bone ash. This creates a malleable paste or putty that can be moulded over a former and worked until it cools and hardens, with further possibilities for carving detail.

WASL - © Wessex Archaeological Society Limited 2011 all rights reserved

Wessex Archaeological Society is a Registered Charity No. 6932091514

Surfers Against Sewage - Beach Litter Letter Christmas Cards

Surfers Against Sewage asked me to design their 2011 Christmas Cards. So I plundered my constantly growing collection of plastic objects from the UK coast to come up with the four designs below. Now available from the SAS online shop and other discerning outlets elsewhere.

SAS have put an environmental campaign message on the back of the card about marine pollution so you can spread the word this Christmas! Pack of 8 A6 sized cards with white recycled envelopes, 2 of each design. The cards are 100% post consumer waste recycled card = Ł3.50. Bargain!

Hamburg based Segel Journal article

German sailing magazine 'Segel Journal' published a small article on my work in their latest edition. Google translation below images, so may not be quite accurate. www.segeljournal.com

Steve McPherson is one of the hottest artists in England. And everything he does for his works are extensive beach walks. He collects plastic waste that is washed up on the beach, and turns them into cheerful, colorful collages. The 37-year-old lives in the coastal town of Margate, for the already William Turner, the master of the 19th Light Century has raved. "I am a beachcomber," McPherson says of himself. When his bucket is full, he returns to his studio, cleans the finds and arranges them into collages that work surprisingly pleasant - although they are based on civilization but waste. Whether lollipop sticks, toy ammunition, Legos or Smarties cap: They all can make a moving work of art. "My work is contemporary archeology," says McPherson. Meanwhile, he also has a blog, in which all can participate by uploading photos of the found on the beach plastic waste. What's striking about the artist: he is colorblind.

(As ever click on the images to get a closer look).

My time was spent mainly in awe of the magnificent landscapes carved by the sea and elements. The results of which can be found at www.stevemcpherson.co.uk. It took little time, of the my three month stay, to fall in love with the islands and its friendly people, i went back the next year, and then in 2006 my wife and I decided to get married on Shetland. I still miss its beauty and long for another return.

bonhoga-gallery website

Liv Magazine 'Plastic Beach' Article

Last year I was contacted by Bill Dunn former editor of the men's magazine GQ, who wanted to do an article on my work with marine/beach plastic. So he came on a stormy day, along with the photographer Andrew Shaylor (who currently has an exhibition 'Rockin' (The Rockabilly Scene) at the national Theater). We had a great day at the beach dodging the showers, finding plastic and chatting about Margate, plastic pollution, traveling and photography.

So a few months have now passed and in the post on Friday came a couple of copies of the Swedish LIV magazine. A magazine that is created for Volvo, and which is sent to 1.5 million Volvo customers in 75 countries and printed in 30 different languages. Phew! its strange to think that potentially over a million people worldwide will get to see me and my work, (though to be fair the portrait shot isn't the most flattering, never mind. Andrew took a much better one that he wanted them to use, which can be seen at the 'General' Portraits section of his website www.shaylorphoto.com). Regardless of that, I am really happy with the article and the moody shot of Epple Bay with the Turner sky was more incredible in the flesh than in the photo, but so typical of this coastline. Click on the images to view them larger.

Light Vessel Historical Society, talks at LV21

On the 20th April, 4 members of the Light Vessel Historical Society gave 4 talks on board Light Vessel 21 at Gillingham pier, Kent. Discussed was new information regarding the secret history of LV21, and its unique experimental role during 1944 at the East Goodwin Station. With the help of documents recovered from archives (see examples below), diary entries and personal effects from the former crew, the story was revealed, questions asked, and information based on current findings divulged.

Although the proceedings were interrupted by a group of 'artists' also on board the vessel showing their doodles, the talks were a success and well attended.

Please click on the images above for more insight into this truly riveting event
